What Creates a Sapphire's Hue

The Alchemy of Colour: What Creates a Sapphire’s Hue

Sapphires are known for their stunning range of colours—far beyond the classic royal blue. These hues are created by trace elements that interact with the corundum (the mineral that forms sapphires) during its formation. Each element leaves its subtle mark, resulting in a gemstone that’s entirely one-of-a-kind. Here’s a look at what brings each colour to life:

What Gives a Sapphire Its Colour?

  • BlueIron + Titanium
The classic sapphire shade. Iron and titanium together produce rich, deep blues—from inky navy to vibrant cornflower.

  • Teal / Green-BlueIron + Vanadium (sometimes Chromium)
A blend of sea and forest, teal sapphires are often created when both iron and trace amounts of vanadium are present.

  • PinkChromium
Soft pink to vivid magenta tones are caused by chromium. The more chromium, the deeper the pink. Less chromium = lighter blush tones.

  • Violet / Purple / PlumVanadium + Chromium
These romantic hues are created when vanadium is present, sometimes with a touch of chromium to deepen the saturation.

  • Peach / Padparadscha (Sunset Hues)Chromium + Iron
This rare and highly prized tone—a blend of pink and orange—is caused by a delicate balance of chromium and iron.

  • YellowIron
Higher levels of iron (without titanium) can produce golden yellow sapphires, from buttery pastels to rich amber tones.

More Than Chemistry

A sapphire’s colour is also influenced by its origin, cut, and light. Some stones show colour zoning—bands of different shades within the same gem—while others shift in hue under different lighting. This phenomenon, known as pleochroism, gives many sapphires a subtle, magical glow.

At Melissa Caron, I seek out sapphires that feel like brushstrokes from nature—each one hand-selected for its saturation, cut, vibrancy, sparkle, and character. These gemstones aren’t just colourful—they’re alive with story and emotion.
